The Bedlington Terrier with its spear-shaped head, curly coat and arched back looks rather like a little sheep. In fact it has been described as a dog with the appearance of a lamb and the heart of a lion.
Originally bred as a hunter of rats and small game, the Bedlington Terrier is lively, loyal and headstrong. It can be agressive with other animals and needs to be trained to like them from an early age. Careful breeding has resulted in a more companionable and affectionate personality in today's Bedlington Terrier. They are loving dogs with children and usually reasonably friendly with strangers.
They can be highly strung, they like to bark and they're enthusiastic diggers. They are very fast and require an enclosed yard. They must always be walked on a leash as they are likely to chase other animals when let off. Remember, they are natural hunters.
They grow to around 15in. to 17in. and often live to 15 years or more.
A Bedlington Terrier is a suitable apartment dog but will require a lot of exercise. They will remain faily active indoors but without regular exercise they will become bored and get into mischief.
The Bedlington Terrier's coat sheds little or no hair and the breed is considered suitable for allergy sufferers. The coat will require specialized clipping every six weeks so it we be useful to learn to do this yourself. Brush your dog regularly and clean his ears. He will not require frequent washing and, although his skin will not dry out from washing his coat can become lank.
